Position Summary

Reporting to the President of the University of Florida, and a member of the President’s Cabinet, the Senior Vice President for Health Affairs (SVPHA) serves as the senior officer for the university’s academic health center and has overall responsibility and accountability for all of UF Health, including its research, education, and clinical missions.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Vision

In collaboration with key stakeholders, develops, articulates, resources, and implements a strategic vision for the UF academic health center and marshals the necessary financial and human resources to achieve goals in research, education, and clinical care. Acts in all areas as a forward-thinking and transformational leader. Fosters interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance research, education, and clinical care across the health colleges and with the colleges and centers of the university overall.

Leadership

The Senior Vice President for Health Affairs (SVPHA) will be responsible for creating and communicating a compelling vision for the future of the academic health center, ensuring its goals align with the broader objectives of the University. This leader will foster an environment of trust, integrity, and accountability, while promoting a positive climate for learning, research, and clinical care. As a member of the President’s Cabinet, the Senior Vice President will play a key role in shaping the university’s overall strategic direction.

Academic and Research Excellence

The SVPHA will promote excellence in basic, clinical, and translational research programs across the health colleges in partnership with the Vice President for Research. This individual will ensure the delivery of high-quality undergraduate, graduate, professional, and clinical education to a diverse student population, in collaboration with the Provost. The Senior Vice President will hold overall responsibility and accountability for clinical education programs, while sharing responsibility with the Provost for undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs within the health colleges.

Clinical Programs

Collaborating with the President/System Chief Executive Officer of the UF Health Corporation, the SVPHA will provide vision and overarching leadership to serve a diverse patient population, addressing the needs of a wide range of health care payers while driving the development of additional areas of clinical excellence. This individual will foster collaboration among the various components of UF Health, including the UF Health colleges and the UF Health clinical enterprise’s hospitals, outpatient clinical facilities, and faculty and employed physician practices regarding clinical resource allocation decisions. Additionally, the Senior Vice President will support excellence in hospital operations for graduate medical education programs, research, patient care, and the development of new clinical programs.

Talent Development

The SVPHA will ensure that key leadership roles within UF’s academic health center (UF Health overall) are filled with faculty and staff of nationally recognized ability, who are coached and supported to deliver outstanding outcomes in both academic and clinical care missions. This includes recruiting, motivating, and retaining top-tier faculty, deans, academic leaders, hospital executives, and program leaders to ensure UF Health has the talent necessary to execute its strategic plans.

Advocacy

Cultivates strong, credible, and trusting relationships with alumni, donors, government leaders, and related external stakeholders in support of the educational, research, and clinical missions of UF and UF Health. Acts as an effective representative and spokesperson for UF Health overall.

Fiscal Oversight

The SVPHA will lead the financing and budgeting processes for UF Health overall in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer for UF Health Corporation, the college Deans, and the University’s Chief Financial Officer, ensuring effective fiscal oversight and alignment with the organization’s strategic goals.

Fundraising and Development

The SVPHA will play a leadership role in fundraising for the academic health center (UF Health overall), leading efforts in the University’s capital campaign to support the organization’s growth and strategic initiatives.
