Executive Leadership in Complex Academic Health Environments

Previous successful leadership role within a successful major medical center, such as a chancellor, dean, vice president, or other relevant senior leadership roles. Holding an equivalent role in industry is also acceptable, especially if combined with a prior faculty position or leadership role in academia. Responsibility for recruitment, finances/budgeting, strategy setting, and philanthropy are important components of the leadership experience sought in this recruitment.

Research and Education Leadership

Personal success in establishing and expanding an institutional research program in the health sciences, including strategic development and implementation in collaboration with scholars and practitioners outside the candidate’s own field; success developing and leading multidisciplinary educational programs in collaboration with other university or institutional leaders.

Operational Acumen

Demonstrated managerial abilities and enthusiasm for the administrative and financial responsibilities of the position, with understanding of the financial pressures facing academic health centers and health care delivery organizations and the principles of mission-based budgeting and funds flow.

External Representation

Demonstrated success as the public face of an institution and in philanthropic pursuits.

Personal Scholarship

Strong preference for a physician-scientist or clinician-scientist with a strong record of scholarship, including a record of substantial, extramural peer-reviewed funding, and national/international recognition. Academic credentials sufficient to engender respect within the University of Florida and UF Health and support appointment as a tenured full professor.

A strong track record of superior financial performance, coupled with success in personnel recruitment and development, is essential. Additionally, should be recognized as a mentor and developer of talent, with a proven ability to coach individuals to achieve their fullest potential.

Collaborating and Influencing

The Senior Vice President for Health Affairs (SVPHA) will build and nurture relationships with stakeholders to effectively guide the health sciences’ contributions to UF and UF Health. This includes demonstrating a deep appreciation for all health sciences disciplines, fostering inter-college collaboration, and championing unified efforts across UF entities. The candidate will establish productive connections within the health sciences enterprise, the broader university, and UF Health, cultivating long-term collaborations and partnerships. Additionally, they will value and strengthen relationships between the health sciences and other UF units while promoting a culture of respect, dignity, and inclusivity for UF’s students, staff, faculty, and stakeholders.

Leading Change

The SVPHA must thrive in a complex, fast-paced institution undergoing transformation on multiple fronts while managing complementary and competing priorities. They will lead the academic, research, and clinical missions of UF Health by identifying and driving changes that advance education and research, embracing transformational initiatives such as Artificial Intelligence at UF and Drug Discovery at The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology to enhance the university’s stature and productivity. The candidate will adapt plans to align with the political realities, strengths, and constraints of the university, health system, and state, effectively engaging stakeholders and securing buy-in through tailored influence strategies. Additionally, they will establish practices that foster innovation and collaboration to achieve sustained success.
